The United States Coast Guard 1790 To The Present

Posted:

The United States Coast Guard has a fascinating history. At last there is one definitive volume describing its history from inception to the present. Thomas P. Ostrom, served in the USCGR from 1961-69, and had basic and advanced training at the USCG Base, Alameda, California. He served subsequently in the Port Security Reserve Unit in Duluth, Minnesota, and participated in monthly and active duty assignments each summer, earning petty officer rank.

The USCG on the Great Lakes is described in fascinating detail here. The author considers lighthouses, life-saving, law enforcement, aids to navigation, environmental protection, commerce, ice breaking, port security, and national defense from the 19th century to the present. "Another great resource for researchers from USCG historian, Thomas P. Ostrom." -- Night Owl Reviews
